Last week the Mustang world was rocked by rumors that Ford would forgo offering a four-cylinder EcoBoost engine in the United States. This ran contrary to all the rumors we had heard for the past three years that Ford would offer either a 2.0 or 2.3 liter EcoBoost engine in the 2015 Mustang, producing in the area of 300 horsepower. But one article from Edmunds seemed to dash the hopes for a revived Mustang SVO.

But Road & Track has fired back with their own article asserting that Edmunds sources were wrong, and that a four-cylinder EcoBoost Mustang will indeed appear in the American market. Unlike previous rumors though, Road & Track asserts that the four-cylinder turbo will not be a base model engine like early speculation suggested.

Rather, Road & Track says that the four-cylinder EcoBoost engine will be a mid-level upgrade over a standard V6 engine, which will carry over (along with the 5.0) from the 2014 model. The EcoBoost four-cylinder will likely be rated at well over 300 horsepower, to make it an appealing choice over the standard V6 (currently rated at a respectable 305 horsepower).

That means the 5.0 engine is likely to get a potent power upgrade as well, perhaps going up to as much as 450 horsepower. Wouldn’t that piss off Corvette fanboys? Another rumor Road & Track adds to the pyre is that of steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for the automatic transmission. It would certainly be an upgrade in our eyes, though we still prefer to shift for ourselves.

We still have months to wait to find out which publication has the truth of the matter, but we’re leaning with Road & Track here. Everything we’ve heard for years indicates a four-cylinder turbo is going into the Mustang; why the 11th hour change?
