If you consider yourself a Ford Mustang fan, by now you no doubt have heard the rumors of an EcoBoost-powered Mustang. With the next-gen Mustang slated to hit dealerships next year, many outlets have speculated that either a 2.0 or 2.3 liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine would debut as the base powerplant for the 2015 Ford Mustang. Makes sense, right?

Well a new report from Edmunds suggests that the Ford Mustang will indeed get a four-cylinder EcoBoost engine…but only in Europe. So what does that mean for America?

Ford has already made it clear that they intend to sell the Mustang in Europe and America on the same platform, and this had spurred rumors of a four-cylinder EcoBoost option. We were under the impression that the four-cylinder EcoBoost engine would be offered both in America and Europe, but Edmunds says the four-cylinder option will be for Europe only. Wealthier European buyers will also have the option of buying the big V8.

Rumors peg the four-cylinder engine at 2.3 liters and around 300 horsepower. But if Ford doesn’t intend on selling a four-cylinder turbo Mustang in America…well, what are they tending on selling? Will the 3.7 liter V6 engine live on? Will a new V6 replace it? Is Ford going to offer a naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine for base model Mustangs instead?

To be frank, we’re not sure we believe Edmund’s unquoted sources, and this story smells suspect at best. But if Ford really does drop the four-cylinder EcoBoost engine from the 2015 Mustang, would you still want a 2015 Mustang?
