There is no doubt that we often look with lust upon the Land Down Under when it comes to performance vehicles. Turbocharged sedans? Check. Miles of open, unpoliced back country? Check. A devout and inventive aftermarket? Check and check. And yet despite all of this, performance cars from the factory don’t make as much power as American muscle cars, because of much stricter emissions standards. That’s why the supercharged “Miami” 5.0 engine in the new Ford Falcon GT only made 450 horsepower.
Responding to the collective groan and letdown, Motor Authority reports that Ford is turning out a new boosted Falcon V8 that should easily make 500 horsepower. Here are some of the spy shots. Too good to be true, or about damn time?
It simply came down to the fact that in order to meet the strict fuel economy and emissions standards, Ford had to drastically detune the supercharged Miami 5.0 and put on a restrictive exhaust. The final result was just 450 horsepower…at the wheels, which ain’t too shabby. But as we’ve seen from American companies, 550 wheel horsepower is all but expected from a supercharged engine these days. So Ford’s FPV division is stepping up to the plate and preparing to knock one out of the park.
The new super sedan will be called the GT-H, an homage to the GT-HO Falcons of days gone past. It will sport dual intercoolers that should help dial the horsepower up to around 500 ponies. The Miami 5.0 engine had no intercoolers, and perhaps a less restrictive tune and exhaust system will make this supercharged sedan truly lust-worthy. Then its just a matter of crying out loud enough before Ford finally gives in and gives us back the rear-wheel drive sport sedan we all love and want.
