Video: Australia Gets Its Own BOSS; The BOSS 355 GT Falcon

Next year the Ford Boss Mustang hits showroom floors nationwide. With 440 horsepower on tap, its slightly more powerful than the standard 2011 Mustang GT, but it’s suspension has been tuned for the track. But rather than import this track beast to Australia, Ford is instead taking the Boss name, and applying it to the famous Falcon moniker that Aussies have always loved.

Top Speed reports that for 2011, Ford is producing a special edition Falcon, called the BOSS 335 GT with a supercharged version of the new 5.0 engine under the hood. But don’t get too jealous America, because this supercharged 5.0 doesn’t make as much power as you might think.

You see, Australia has much stricter emissions requirements than us. Called the “Euro 4” standard, it really limits how much CO2, NOX, and other emissions can come out of a tailpipe. We’re talking 0.50 grams-per-kilometer of CO2 and 0.25 g/km for NOX. If that sounds really small, that’s because it is, and while that’s fine and dandy for small displacement four-cylinder engines, a 5.0 liter V8 with a supercharged engine needs an eco-friendly tune and power-restricting emissions equipment to meet these standards.

Even with a supercharger strapped to the 5.0, the Aussie version makes just 335 kW (450 horsepower), from which the special edition car gets its name. We know that here in America, a supercharged 5.0 engine is good for at least 550 horsepower, and our own naturally-aspirated BOSS engine makes 440 horsepower without a supercharger.

With a sticker price of $70,000 in American greenbacks, it’s 75% more expensive than the 2012 BOSS Mustang, but just 2% more powerful. That’s because of Australia’s Value-Added Tax (VAT), which taxes every step of the manufacturing process, driving up costs. However, it is still a factory-supercharged 5.0 engine, and a good tuner and new exhaust system are sure to free up a lot of horsepower. It also gets a swanky interior, stripes, and BOSS emblems of course.

A few people who have already gotten their hands on these cars have put them on the dyno already, and say the horsepower is closer to 450 ponies at the wheels. In fact, we found a video showing this BOSS 335 GT putting down over 473 horsepower at the wheels in stock form. Is Ford underestimating the power of this engine on purpose? It makes us wonder just what kind of power this car is really capable of. Perhaps that extra $70,000 isn’t so outrageous after all.
