2012 Mustang BOSS 302S VIN #0001 Crashes at Track

When Ford announced that it was bringing back the BOSS 302 name for 2012, Mustang fans were thrilled, excited, and looking forward to all sorts of shenanigans behind the wheel of a new BOSS. There are several flavors of BOSS Mustangs to choose from, including the standard issue BOSS, the track-ready Laguna Seca Edition. And then there is the BOSS 302S, a car built and bred solely for racing.

Ford pledged to build just 50 BOSS 302S models, and Jalopnik reports that the first of these, bearing VIN #0001, has just taken a nasty hit whilst out racing.

The BOSS 302S reportedly belongs to racer Richard Golinello, who was competing at last week’s Mid-Ohio Pirelli World Challenge race in the GTS class. This was the first BOSS 302S to roll off the assembly line, and like its cousin, the first 2012 BOSS 302 Mustang built, Ford sold it without much fanfare to an unsuspecting customer. And while the owner of BOSS 302 #0001 sold it to ensure it survived, Golinello opted to race his piece of Ford history.

And why not? It is, after all, a race car, no matter what the VIN number says. No doubt the damage looks pretty severe, but these cars are built tough, and we’re confident that that’ll buff right out. Golinello has already told Jalopnik that he plans to have it back on the track by the end of the month.  We’ve got to ask though, would you knowingly race a car that was the first of its kind?
