It is amazing how much importance can be placed on a Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN. The right VIN number can increase the value of rotted-out hulk by tens of thousands of dollars, and automakers have taken to auctioning off the all-important number-one car at large events like Barrett-Jacksoin. But Ford didn’t do that with the new Boss Mustang, instead auctioning off the only Grabber Blue Laguna Seca Edition Boss Mustang Ford that will ever be built.
So what happened to the number one car? It wound up in a Texas dealership, where Shane McGlaun purchased it for a mere $1,500 over the MSRP. Mustangs Daily got an interview with Shane, the unwitting owner of the first 2012 Boss 302 Mustang off the assembly line.
Shane had a Competition Orange Boss 302 on order that wasn’t destined to be built until the fourth quarter of this year. He knew he had to trade in his 2010 Mustang soon to get the most for his trade in, and on a whim called Prestige Ford in Garland, Texas, where he had bought his 2010 Mustang as well as his wife’s Ford Edge. So obviously, Shane is a Ford guy, but he refused to pay the $5,000 over retail Prestige Ford wanted for the car.
He ended up negotiating the price down to just $1,500 over retail, and when he arrived at the dealership popped the hood and read off the VIN number, which ended in 0001. The dealership apparently thought they had the first Boss in this particular color, but as it turns out it was the first 2012 Boss off the assembly line. Talk about dumb luck. Shane will be using his Boss as a daily driver, dropping off his kids, picking up groceries and the like. Shane does say that he would sell this special car to a collector who pays off the loan and replaces it with a similar vehicle, Competition Orange with the Recaro seats and a torsion differential options, but we think its cool that the first-of-its-kind will see use as a regular road car.
