As we recently detailed, ROUSH Performance recently put forth its supercharger system for the 2018 Mustang GT. Based on Eaton’s new R2650 rotor pack, this blower brings big-power with a warranty. Eager to try one of these systems out, the crew at CJ Pony Parts picked up a kit and documented the install on Director of Video Content Bill Tumas’ new project pony.
“I absolutely love the car. I didn’t care for the front end at first, but it quickly grew on me, and now the ’15-’17 looks dated. The power and the MagneRide are amazing. The gear ratios in the MT82 aren’t the best for naturally aspirated quarter mile, but they are perfect for boost and I find them more useable,” Bill said. “I used the ROUSH on my 2015 and loved it. Having 600 horsepower at the tires with a warranty is tough to argue against. Stock drivability and instant power also make for an amazing combo.”

As a result of the new rotors, redesigned case, and 2018-specific intake, the kit is said to be 4-percent more thermally efficient while it delivers 25-percent more airflow. It also takes about 18-percent less power to drive this blower, so it is not only .35-liters larger than its predecessor, it does a better job efficiently generating power.
Before getting down to business, you’ll want to disconnect the battery. Then, if you are going to be sending your PCM to ROUSH for a new calibration, you’ll want to remove it, box it up and send it out right away. Then you can dig into removing all the factory induction from the airbag to the intake manifold. Removing said manifold reveals the DI fuel system that required a new ROUSH lower intake. “For the 2018 Mustang we made a move from the Eaton 2300 rotating group to the 2650 rotating group, making it one of the first uses of an Eaton 2650 on a Ford-powered vehicle,” Andrew Dey, Engineering Manager at ROUSH Performance, recently told us. “As far as differences, the obvious thing that everyone will notice with the R2650 is the torque curve. While we are making slightly less peak power than our 2015-2017 Mustang Phase 2 ROUSHcharger system, we have the torque curve equaled or beat from the start of the pull to the end.”
Displacing 2.65 liters, this new supercharger is designed to deliver 700 horsepower and 610 lb-ft of torque at the flywheel. It does so by cranking out 12 pounds of boost and burning 91-octane fuel thanks to a ROUSH-engineered calibration.
Before moving on to the intercooler lower, follow the highly detailed instructions and use the CJPP video as a guide to rework some of the coolant hoses, tweak some of the vacuum lines, and modify the timing cover. Then you can make the necessary wiring mods, install the colder spark plugs, and drop on the new lower intake.
To find out how much power this system deliver to the rear wheels, Bill set out to install the system as part of CJ’s popular online video series.
“It really isn’t a bad install. The most intimidating thing to some people is the timing-cover modification, but with the 2018, you only have to grind one small part and tap a hole. It only took about 20 minutes to do. Everything else is basic hand tools. The instructions are pretty detailed and there is this amazing install video,” he laughed.

With the install complete, the car obviously requires a new calibration, which ROUSH can flash to your car’s computer. If you are doing the install yourself and don’t have a ROUSH dealer with the setup to flash locally, it’s probably a great idea to send your unit to them before you begin the install.
With the blower bolted on, you can reinstall the coolant hoses, plumb the intercooler lines, install the intercooler pump, mount the heat exchanger, and bolt on the new cold-air intake system. Button up a few other things and you are almost ready to make power.
“I have the ROUSH pass-through device that the dealers do, so it was very simple and took 10 minutes,” Bill explained. “If you don’t have access to that tool, you can send your ECU to ROUSH and they will tune it for a small fee and turn it around in a day.”
Of course, before you can let your 2018 Mustang rip with the new supercharger, your car’s powertrain control module needs the companion ROUSH Performance calibration to make the magic happen. CJ Pony Parts has the ability to flash that calibration in-house, but you will need to send your PCM to ROUSH for the flash and reinstall it when it ships back.
As you can see in the dyno results video above, the ROUSHCharged 2018 definitely outperforms its 2.3-liter predecessor on a first-gen S550. Bill’s GT pumped out 648 horsepower and 532 lb-ft to the rear wheels, which is impressive. However, those are just numbers, and it’s what the car feels like that really matters.
With the install completed, Bill decided to break-in the new combo with a road trip to the NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals in Georgia. The car performed like a champ and upon its return, it hit the dyno.
“In normal driving, you don’t even know it is there. There is no surging, it’s very quiet, and it drives like stock. Hit the gas in first or second gear and the traction control system fights a losing battle. Once you find traction is just pins you to the seat. I put over 30,000 miles on my ROUSHcharged ’15 and the ’18 pulls harder for sure. The new R2650 is the real deal. I can only imagine what it’s capable of with a custom tune and more boost! The day after the install I hopped in the car and drove all the way to Georgia for the NMRA race and got 24 miles per gallon while cruising at 75-80 MPH. Pretty amazing!”
Before installing the supercharger, Bill’s 2018 Mustang GT put down 420 horsepower and 532 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. With the addition of the 2018 5.0 Mustang Phase 1 ROUSHcharger Kit (PN 422090; $7,699.99), the car picked up 228.02 horsepower and 143.11 lb-ft of torque at the wheels. Bill compared the new supercharged combo with this ROUSHCharged 2015 Mustang (right). The new combo is better by 29.5 horsepower and 49.55 lb-ft of torque.
These modern Mustangs and mods are definitely an impressive combination. To think you can have that kind of performance and still drive around with a three-year, 36,000-mile warranty… it’s an amazing time to be a Mustang enthusiast!
