Vortech Boosts The Shelby GT350 Beyond 700 Horsepower

For many, the modern Shelby is the perfect Mustang. Engineered for the road course with an active suspension and an 8,000-plus-rpm redline, the new GT350 is an amazing machine. The centerpiece of its performance, however, is the Flat-Plane-Crank 5.2-liter engine known as the Voodoo, which is rated at 526 horsepower from the factory. What could make this car even better? How about a Vortech supercharger?

Vortech Engineering has taken this spectacular platform to the next level with our new V-3 complete supercharging system,” says the company. “With an easy to install dual-plate mounting system that combines rigid mounting; light weight; all-aluminum, mandrel-bent discharge ducting for superior airflow; and a huge 900-plus horsepower tested 24x13x3.5-inch charge cooler core, this system is ready to make power efficiently and reliably on your GT350 on the street or at the track.”

Based on the vaunted V-3 SCi compressor with a 3.8-inch drive pulley, this system features mandrel-bent, aluminum discharge tubes; a 98mm blow-through mass airflow housing with an integrated air straightener; and a 24x13x3.5-inch air-to-air intercooler. Details also include a carbon-fiber inlet tube that joins the blower inlet with the factory air box and a a Vortech Maxflow Race Bypass Valve to relieve the pressure when the throttle body closes.

“Higher static compression ratio and engine redline were considered as we selected fuel injector, impeller speed, and boost level,” Mike Reagan, Senior Engineer at Vortech Engineering, explained.

In doing the development, the Vortech engineering team found the behavior of the Voodoo 5.2 engine quite similar to that of its Coyote cousin.

“These engines are a perfect match to the output of a centrifugal compressor,” Mike said.

On only 6 pounds of boost, the Vortech supercharger system elevates the Voodoo 5.2’s engine output by 187 horsepower and 109 lb-ft of torque.

More impressive gains can be made with higher fuel octane and a custom calibration, if desired.—Mike Reagan, Vortech

Offered in black (PN 4FQ218-074L), polished (PN 4FQ218-078L) or satin (PN 4FQ218-070L) finishes, these kits are carefully calibrated with an SCT Performance tuner on California’s weak-sauce 91-octane to boost the Voodoo 5.2-liter’s flywheel output to 713 horsepower and 538 lb-ft of torque. Naturally, more power can be had on higher octane fuel, and if you want to supply your own fuel and tuning support, tuner kits are also for sale.

“Vortech is traditionally conservative with our production calibrations in order to ensure engine and system reliability,” Mike added. “Considering our 91-octane California fuel, we feel this is a good balance of power and safety. More impressive gains can be made with higher fuel octane and a custom calibration, if desired.”
