As a kid, who here didn’t want to grow up to be a race car driver? Most of us at the powerTV offices did, and to a certain extent we can live those dreams in amateur racing events that have sprung up at so many tracks nationwide. Part of the draw is the incredible speed and inherent danger that comes with being a race car driver, though the danger part is often overlooked.
In what could be one of the scariest high-speed crashes we’ve ever seen, a Cobra race car loses control at 130 MPH and proceeds to violently roll over and flip. And the whole thing was caught by a GoPro camera.
Unbelievably, the driver of this Cobra kit car somehow survived this high speed accident. What exactly happened to the car is unclear, but the GoPro camera catches all of the horrendous action as the Cobra suddenly veers right just before the brake zone on the fastest part of the track. It is one of the most horrendous accidents we have ever witnessed so close up, but amazingly the driver lives through the whole ordeal, receiving only minor injuries to his left knee and ribs.
The engine and transmission are actually for sale out of this car, though it remains uncertain what caused the accident. The most likely culprit is a steering or suspension issue that caused the Cobra to lose control at such high speeds. It is hard to believe that with so little in the way of safety equipment, this driver walked away…and yet there it is. Another important reminder to buckle up, especially if you plan on racing!
