James Douglas Morrison aka Jim Morrison of The Doors is one of the biggest names in the Rock and Roll Pantheon of Awesome. But while he was an incredible musician and front-man, Morrison was notoriously abusive of both himself and others, including his own personal property.
This included a 1967 Shelby GT500 that Morrison owned and loved and abused the hell out of. Legend has it that one night after consuming drugs and/or alcohol, Morrison crashed the Shelby, went down the street to a bar, and returned to find his Shelby gone. So what happened to it?
Morrison either bought the ‘67 Nightmist Blue Shelby GT500 for himself, or was given it by Elektra Records for The Doors successful self-titled album. He called it “The Blue Lady” and even starred with it in a movie called The Highway, where he did donuts in the desert. Morrison drove his Shelby hard and without regret.
As the legend goes, when Morrison crashed the Shelby on the famous Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. He grew frustrated waiting for either the police or tow company to show up, so he went down the street to a bar to continue partying. When he came back, the Shelby was gone, and nobody knows where. At least that is one story.
Other stories say that the Shelby was repaired, then used in The Highway, and that the car was eventually towed when Morrison left it in LAX for too long. Other stories have him crashing and totaling the Shelby into a police station. All of these stories may have a hint of truth, but we’ll never know for sure. Morrison died in 1971 of a heroin overdose, and his talent as well as his Shelby has remained lost to history.
Was it sent to the crusher? Bought at police auction? Or does it still sit in some junkyard somewhere, waiting to be restored by the lucky bastard who finds it?
