Video: The Mustang Cobra Jet Twin-Turbo Concept At The Track

What is the future of the Ford Mustang? We have at least a few more months before Ford unveils its next-generation pony car to millions of eager enthusiasts, though they may have given us a taste of what’s to come last November. That is when Ford rolled out the Mustang Cobra Jet Concept, which does away with the supercharger and replaces it with twin-turbochargers.

While Ford never got around to discussing horsepower details, they did put together this awesome video showing the twin-turbo Mustang roaring down the track like a cheetah on crack. Oh, that sound! There are also interviews with some Ford big-wigs, including Jesse Kershaw, who we interviewed about the Mustang Cobra Jet Concept back in October.

The Mustang Cobra Jet stuck to a familiar Ford record for awhile, using a large V8 engine topped with a supercharger to create incredible power. The Cobra Jets that Ford has sold have been winning races left and right, so there is certainly nothing wrong with this setup. However, Ford has made a big investment in turbo technology with its EcoBoost engine, yet the Mustang is about the only Ford vehicle without an EcoBoost engine option.

Tthe Mustang Cobra Jet Concept could hint at the future of turbos and the Mustang, and the future looks good. We are willing to bet that the next Shelby GT500 will drop superchargers in favor of turbos, and it has been all but confirmed that a four-cylinder EcoBoost Mustang will be available to buy at launch next year. For now though, let’s drool over the Cobra Jet Concept for a few more minutes. Who doesn’t love the sound of a turbocharger spooling to 150,000 RPMs?
