A few weeks ago at SEMA, Pure Vision Design unveiled an incredible Mustang called the Martini T-5R. With lightweight fiberglass body panels, a NASCAR-designed transmission, and a race-ready suspension setup, it was clear what this Mustang was set up for. Yet at the heart of it all was a unique engine setup that wasn’t only lightweight, but both technologically advanced and incredibly powerful.
Now for the first time we get to see this engine up close on the engine dyno. Based on a 1960s Indy car engine design, the Martini V8 is a mix of modern engine technology and classic designs…and it sounds just lovely.
Using a 260 cubic-inch Indycar V8 block as the basis, this motor was actually punched-out to 292 cubic-inches. The dual-overhead camshaft design allows the motor to rev all the way up to 9,000 RPM, though in the video the motor only goes up to a mere 7,000 RPM. Even so, it made 426 horsepower on the engine dyno, and was amazingly still climbing.
And just listen to that engine sing! The sound is incredible, even more so when you consider that the engine and transmission combined weigh less than 400 pounds. Even though the engine design dates back almost 50 years, it still can be equipped with Holley’s Dominator EFI system, providing smooth and consistent fuel flow.
This is one engine that would be at home in just about any project car.
