Mustang owners and horsepower fanatics have known for years that any form of forced induction makes for big horsepower. Turbos though, have a way of being sneaky as they always seem to offer that stealthy approach, preying upon the unsuspecting victim until it’s too late.
We recently came across a cool video of the Poco Speed Garage 1993 Fox-body coupe terrorizing the track with the help of a turbo under the hood. The video shows this coupe being street driven to the track before it makes a few runs.
Outfitted with a Ford Racing BOSS block, the 331 cubic-inch engine has forged internals, and features AFR 205 heads, with shaft rockers bumped by a custom solid-roller camshaft. A Precision Turbo 88mm snail breathes 16.5 psi of boost into the engine during this video. The whole combination runs on pump gas with a little help from water-methanol injection to keep the internals happy as boost climbs. Fast XFI 2.0 manages the engine functions. Exhaust is fed from the 4-inch to 3.5-inch downpipe, and then out a single bullet muffler.
Typically with a combination like this we usually see a C4 or Powerglide transmission backing things up. It would seem that the Poco Speed guys prefer to bang their own gears and do so with a Tremec T-56. A McLeod twin disc RXT clutch helps speed up those shifts and ensures that all the power is transmitted quickly and effectively to the rear axle. Mickey Thompson ET drag slicks measuring 29.5×10.5 do their best to provide plenty of grip as the 331 works tirelessly to overpower them.
From the data we have on the video the car’s two-step is set to leave at 4,750 RPM with around 11.5 psi of boost. Shifts come quick and watching the Monster Tach we see they’re happening at just over 7,000 RPM, on the way to an ET of 9.47 at 149 MPH. It’s a cool trip down the strip, and amazing to watch the driver bang gears so quickly, combined with violent scream of the boost from the turbo. Watching this one makes us anxious to get back to the track with Wild E Coyote soon and some of our other project cars soon.
