Not all of us can drive a Mustang everyday. Sometimes the needs of the family, or just the weather where we live encroach on our enjoyment of our favorite pony car. With a large number of offerings in the Ford lineup, there is perhaps no better people hauler, or all weather capable vehicle than the Explorer. With plenty of space, optional all wheel drive, and a variety of traction control aides available the new Explorer offers sure-footed peace-of-mind for getting everyone to their destination safely.
However, dad, or mom might get bored driving such a pedestrian vehicle on a daily basis. Even with EcoBoost power under the hood, it’s hard to get excited about a car that was intended to pickup groceries and soccer equipment. That is unless that EcoBoost engine was tuned by Livernois Motorsports.
With a tune developed by the engineers at Livernois, they have the 2013 Explorer Sport churning out an impressive 334 hp, and 378 ft-lbs of torque. That’s an increase of 47 hp and 50 ft-lbs over the stock numbers of 287/328. Those numbers are good for netting the Explorer mid 13 second time slips in the quarter mile. That type of performance is guaranteed to surprise your buddy in the Camaro in the next lane, and wipe the smirk right off his face when you leave him at the stop light on the way to drop the kids off at school.
The key to this tune is more aggressive management of the engine’s boost, timing, and air/fuel ratios.
Livernois is also currently developing a race version of this tune and parts for the Explorer Sport. Parts include an Airaid cold air intake, performance exhaust system, 170 degree thermostat, and lowering springs. These parts when combined with the current experimental 93 octane tune have netted a best performance of 13.27 at 103 MPH in the quarter-mile. This tune is still in the works but may be available soon as a package with the additional performance parts.
So if you’re looking to make that mundane daily commute more exciting, and maybe a Mustang doesn’t fit your daily needs, or you’d just prefer to leave it at home so the kids don’t litter it with fast food wrappers, check out Livernois Motorsports for the latest go-fast parts for the EcoBoost Explorer.
