If you consider yourself a car enthusiast, you no doubt have heard of the UK motoring series “Top Gear”. While nearly all of us are familiar with the antics of Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond, not all of us are aware of the history of this long-running car-centric television series. So let’s take a trip back over 20 years, to the 15th season of Top Gear.
What’s that? The 15th season of Top Gear was in 1992? But the series only began in 2002! Or so most people think. In fact, 2002 was the reboot of the original Top Gear series, which actually began airing in 1977. In this “lost” episode, a much younger Jeremy Clarkson takes a Fox-body Mustang on a bit of an American road trip, utilizing the same wit and charm we’ve come to expect from this cheeky Brit.
Before we get into Clarkson’s review of the Mustang, can we just point out the outlandish head of hair the man is wearing? It is all the more exacerbated by the fact that he is driving a Fox-body Mustang convertible, though that classic Clarkson sarcasm is intact, noting that he has to slow the Mustang for an approaching corner…15 miles away. Oh Jeremy.
While Clarkson also skewers the Mustang’s acceleration, we think it is fair to point out the pretty poor production values of the original, more serious Top Gear series. Clarkson rightly praises the original Mustang in his segment as well, though almost any Fox-body Mustang would crush most classic Mustangs in a head-to-head drag race.
Suffice to say, we much prefer the new Top Gear format to this retro, classic show.
