It’s either the sweetest day of the year, or the sourest, depending on whom you ask, but Valentines Day is once again hear, and Ford is showing its fans some loves with its latest video. If you’ve got a die-hard Mustang fan in your life with a serious sweet tooth, then this 3D-printed pure-chocolate Mustang is a dream come true.
The project is a two-part effort to help showcase both Ford’s commitment to 3D printing technology, and highlight just how sweet the 2015 Ford Mustang really is.
Taking a detailed model of the 2015 Ford Mustang and molding into a piece of chocolate isn’t easy however, and Ford needed some help from 3D Systems to make this happen. That isn’t to suggest a multi-billion dollar car company like Ford doesn’t have its own 3D printing technology, as Ford was able to make its own scale model out of plastic, the typical medium for this new technology.
Printing a car made of chocolate takes a little more expertise though, which is where 3D systems comes in. The process of making a chocolate (and sugar candy) model Mustang involved using a printer to print water onto a dry sugar substrate. It does this one tiny layer at a time, until you’ve got a three-dimensional Ford Mustang that you can eat.
Sure, it might be cheaper to use a standard chocolate or candy mold, but 3D printing technology is the future. There may come a day that Ford prints off a full-size Mustang for the first time. Imagine the design possibilities. Until then, we want to know where we can get our own 3D chocolate Mustang for Valentine’s day?
