Sometimes we forget just what we are filling our cars up with. Gasoline is not exactly the friendliest or safest of fuels, and all it takes is a little spark and a gas tank leak and BOOM, no more car. This is a big problem in racing as you might imagine, and while modern fuel cells have made things much safer, there’s still the potential for a fiery demise if you’re not careful.
Take for example the video Jalopnik found of a flaming trail of fuel following this Formula Drift Mustang all the way into the pits. They compare it to Back to the Future, but we think it is more like the next Vin Diesel movie; an impending disaster.
We’re not positive, but we think this fire happened at last weekend’s Formula Drift exhibition event, where a bunch of drifters got together to show Texas how to shred tires and get sideways. The event took place at Texas Motor Speedway, where this video claims to be from, so it all makes sense to us. The car in question is campaigned by Tony Brakohiapa and when it first screams by, everything seems fine. But on the return loop it becomes clear there is a problem with the car, as his three fellow drifters have left him far behind. Then there’s the fire. The back of the car looks to be damaged and possible contact with the wall could have ripped a hole in the gas tank.
We guess this is where the whole Back to the Future them came from, but everybody is lucky this didn’t end much worse. We feel like the fire crew could have been a little quicker to respond too (they saw it coming from across the track) but in the end what we’ve got here is a good ol’ Mustang BBQ that ended in a few small burns and nothing more for either car or driver.
