Video: Bilstein’s Manufacturing Process Leading to Quality Products

The name Bilstein should conjure up images of drag racing beasts as well as performance vehicles dominating every sort of motorsport competition across the world. But it’s not just the performance of Bilstein’s suspension components on the track that make them so special. It’s also their manufacturing processes that has launched the company into their industry-leading position. Check it out in the video above.

Bilstein manufactures monotube shock absorbers for performance applications from street/strip muscle cars to off road vehicles. With such a wide range of applications, Bilstein is known for quality not only in their products but in the ride those products produce for customer vehicles.

To make this possible, Bilstein works hard to exceed quality expectations and increase productivity through their manufacturing processes at the company’s Hamilton, Ohio plant. It is here that Bilstein shocks are designed, manufactured and sent out to reputable dealers.

The Bilstein shock manufacturing process starts with the tube department, where man and machine work hand in hand to close off the end of the tube component to prevent leaks. Finished tubes then move on to the machining centers where the components receive grooves for snap rings and go through a cleaning process. CNC controls make sure that every cut that’s made is precise at Bilstein.

In the welding department, shocks are made for an infinite amount of applications, and put together by the company’s robotics. Every shock component is then washed after the welding process to eliminate any chance of contamination.

In the main assembly area, Bilstein shocks finally come together. With the help of automated piston valve stacking equipment, each shock is made with 100 percent accuracy. Rod assembly, dividing pistons and tubes are assembled together in the main assembly area and then performance tested at varying speeds before being filled with gas and oil and then sealed.

Once the products are date stamped, they move on to the paint department for a finishing touch in many different colors. The final process of manufacturing then occurs in the final assembly area where things like labeling and bushing insertion occurs. From there, Bilstein’s products are shipped all over the globe to customers.

Bilstein also has a separate building at the Hamilton facility where engineers ensure the durability and quality of Bilstein’s products prior to mass production. As part of this process, engineers put Bilstein shocks through rigorous accelerated and environmental testing. The engineering facility also houses the warranty department where returned shocks are analyzed and the prototype area where new shocks are designed.

A quality manufacturing process translates into a quality product from Bilstein every day. Just look at your local drag strip or motorsports track for proof.
