When we think of a “safe car”, the Mustang doesn’t necessarily come to mind as our first choice. And it’s not because the Mustang isn’t safe, it’s because Ford markets it as a performance car, not a grocery-getter or a family-hauler. But with safety and crash standards being more important than ever in the last 40 years, inventions like the airbag and the seat-belt have paved the way to a safer driving experience. Ford continues that innovation in form of the ’15 Mustang by introducing the world’s first glove box knee airbag.
The video above we’re discussing is brought to us by Ford Europe‘s YouTube channel, where Sean West – restraints manager for Ford Motor Company, discusses the features and benefits of this new safety technology. He comments, “The Mustang is the first vehicle equipped with a new kind of knee airbag that is integrated within the door of the glove box, instead of the instrument panel, so passengers get maximum room to stretch out. Rather than a textile fabric, the technology consists of an innovative molded plastic design, sandwiched between the outer and inner glove box door surfaces.” They’ve also saved some additional weight as well, as Sean explains that by integrating the airbag into the glove box, it eliminated the need for separate components for an airbag in a different location.
The 2015 Mustang is the first vehicle in the industry to have this technology, and we’re highly impressed by it. If you’re interested in learning more about it, we recommend reading the original story on Ford Europe’s website. You can also find some information we shared on the subject here too.
