For a long time, a great deal of mystery surrounded the identity of Top Gear’s team racing driver, The Stig. It was eventually revealed that rally racing professional Ben Collins was the man behind the mask, and after seven years of entertaining Top Gear audiences, Collins was unceremoniously dumped from production, replaced with…another white Stig. Nonetheless, nobody can deny Collins’ skill behind the wheel, and any vehicular endorsement from him carries quite a bit of weight.
According to AutoGuide, an upcoming documentary called simply “Ben Collins: Stunt Driver” features the former Stig quipping that when it comes to cars, the Ford Mustang is the “weapon of choice” among stunt drivers.
In the documentary, Collins gets behind the wheel of a myriad of vehicles and puts them through various, high-speed challenges in a quest to find the ultimate stunt car. While many vehicles are put through the paces, it is ultimately the 2015 Ford Mustang GT that came out the clear winner. Achieving 0.97 g of lateral acceleration, Collins was also impressed by the healthy 435 horsepower 5.0 liter V8 and responsive suspension.
“The point of this adventure was to find the perfect car for an epic, high octane, Hollywood-style car chase, and it’s the iconic Ford Mustang that gets top billing,” Collins said. “Mustang has starred in many a classic car chase during the past 50 years, and is still the stunt driver’s weapon of choice to leave the bad guys standing in a cloud of tire smoke.”
Ford could not have paid for a more ringing endorsement from the former Stig.
