Ford has a long racing history, and many a Mustang has made its way to the race track over the years. Back in 2008, Ford launched a racing program with Miller Motorsports to produce the FR500S, a track-ready Mustang that was surprisingly affordable, Many racing teams picked these cars up and pushed them to their performance limits. But with the new 5.0 engine in the 2011 Mustang GT, many teams are looking to upgrade, so it should come as no surprise that some of these retired racers are finding their way to auction.

How about one last hurrah for the original 2008 FR500S? SPX Racing joined forces with Miller Motorsports and Ford Racing to produce a one-of-a-kind race-ready FR500S that will be auctioned off for charity at Barrett-Jackson.

The original 2008 FR500 came with 306 horsepower, and later that year the FR500S debuted with 325 horsepower. That was respectable at the time, when neither the Camaro nor Challenger’s were pushing up the performance levels, but since the 400 horsepower is the new 300. To that end new heads, camshaft, and intake has been adding, bumping power up to over 400, in addition to Brembo four-piston calipers and other improved racing bits, bringing it more on par with today’s production Mustangs.

This auction isn’t just for a race-ready Mustang though. In addition to this race car, the auction winner gets a four-day training course at the Ford Racing driving school, at the end of which the auction winner gets a SCCA-approved racing license. But wait, there’s more! SPX will also provide tools, equipment, and basically everything you need to go racing as part of a sponsorship package. All the proceeds from this auction will be donated to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Sure, the holidays might be over, but that doesn’t mean the giving has to end, and this is one of the coolest race car auctions we’ve ever seen. A car, a sponsor, and all the equipment needed to race? If only we had the money…
