Going to an upscale auto auction needs to be on the bucket list of every gearhead. Luckily for Mustang enthusiasts, there is never a shortage of rare, cool, customized, and classic Mustangs heading to auction. These cars range from vintage to wild, awful to awesome, trailer queens and drag racers. So when a big auction comes around, we can’t help but browse the lot listings for some sweet ‘stangs.
The Mecum Auto Auction in Indanapolis is currently under way, but some of the best lots haven’t hit the auction block yet. Among them are a handful of true standouts, including a Pro Street Fox-body, a big-block Eleanor Mustang recreation, and the Kenny Brown CSR-69 concept car.
The first car that really caught our eye was this 1989 Pro Street Mustang. What started as a low-mileage Mustang has become a true track beast, packing a massive 460 cubic-inch V8 engine mated to an ATI C6 automatic transmission. Painted in Corvette Dark Red Metallic, it has four-wheel disc brakes, a narrowed 9” rear-end, and a fiberglass body kit to keep weight down. From front to back, this mighty red beast would look at home in a collector’s garage or on the drag strip. Alas, this bloody-good Mustang was sold off yesterday, but the last two lots are still up for grabs (if you’re quick enough.)
Next up is yet another Eleanor clone car, but don’t discount it just yet. We’ve seen plenty of these tributes to the original Gone in 60 Seconds car, but none of them held a 514 cubic-inch monster V8 engine under the hood pumping out 625 horsepower. That’s a huge engine for this well-known car that sure to raise more than a few eyebrows (and burn quite a few sets of tires.)
There’s also more than just an engine to this car, as a completely modern suspension underpins this throwback Mustang including a Mustang II coil-over suspension, Wilwood brakes, and way more top-dollar components than we can list here. To top it all off, a Richmond six-speed transmission backs this combo up, making it a thoroughly modern take on Eleanor.
However, we’ve saved the very best Mustang for last. This Kenny Brown-built Mustang is actually a SEMA concept car, and was designed to be a track or street car. Called the CSR-69, it was designed to show off all of Brown’s Mustang-oriented performance parts. Kenny Brown and crew started by stiffening the chassis with a 6-point roll cage, strut tower brace, lower chassis brace, and exclusive jacking rails.
A stiffer chassis is great for racing, but there was plenty of other work done too including a larger capacity aluminum radiator, A/C elimination kit, huge 14” brakes from Brembo, headers, a high-flow catalytic converter, and plenty more going on underneath this car. To cap it all off is a retro ’69 Mustang “widebody” ground effects kit. It’s a sharp car, and the most unique out of the whole lot. But there are plenty of other Mustangs to choose from Mecum’s list too, so head on over and see if you can pick out your dream car from their lineup.
