If you know the name Ken Block, it’s most likely from his Gymkhana series of viral videos, where he slides around various obstacles in his Fiesta, Focus, or Hoonicorn Mustang. However, he is also at home in the dirt, as he transitions between the two surfaces in an FIA World Rallycross Focus RS RX. So, when it came time to produce a jaw-dropping video with his oil sponsor, Pennzoil, an off-road twist was a natural variation and Terrakhana was born.
The Head Hoonigan and his team headed to the dunes of Swing Arm City, Utah, with his Ford Fiesta ST RX43 to film an insane, gravity-defying stunt video that is sure to turn some heads.
Pennzoil brought Ken Block and his Ford Fiesta ST RX43 to Swing Arm City, Utah, to film Terrakhana — a wild ride through the desert.
Every time I come to Swing Arm City, I just look and imagine what I can do with this Ford Fiesta. — Ken Block, Hoonigan Racing
“Every time I come to Swing Arm City, I just look and imagine what I can do with this Ford Fiesta,” Ken Block said. “It’s great to come down here and really play.”
Of course, part of the reason for creating the video was to show off the lubrication prowess of Pennzoil’s synthetic lubricants.
“Coming to Southern Utah in the summer is extremely tough on the equipment,” Ken added. “For me to have Pennzoil as the lubricant inside the car, it gives me a lot of confidence that I may break something jumping it, or sliding through some of the turns but knowing that the engine and the oil protecting it is really rock solid is a big confidence boost for me.”
At 4,300 feet of elevation with an ambient temperature of 102 degrees, this location served as an ideal proving ground for Ken’s Fiesta and its lubricants.
We like to test in environments like this because it’s arguably the worst conditions we’ll ever see. — Forrest DuPlessis, Hoonigan Racing
Not that he needs more confidence, but having the right lube in the engine certainly gives his crew peace of mind when Ken’s machines are running at the limit.
“As you go up in temperature you go down in performance. And the higher you go in altitude the lower you go in oxygen. It’s a lot of extra torture that goes on the engine,” Forrest DuPlessis, Shop Manager of Hoonigan Racing and Ken Block’s event spotter in FIA Rally Cross, explained. “Motor oil for us is everything. It’s the lifeblood of the engine. We like to test in environments like this because it’s arguably the worst conditions we’ll ever see.”
Those tough conditions and Ken’s driving prowess certainly make for an entertaining video, and we can’t wait to see what the Hoonigan has up his sleeve next.
