Insurance for High Horsepower Coyotes: VMP’s Billet Oil Pump Gears

As much care as you take when operating and maintaining a car, sometimes it isn’t enough, especially with performance-oriented platforms. There’s a lot out there that no matter how well taken care of they are, there are just some manufacturer defects of sorts. But, quite frankly, we aren’t here to baby cars, we’re here to drive them like they’re meant to be driven–and anyone that does this knows that, a lot of the times, that comes at a cost. Either a cheaper cost before issues arise or a higher cost after issues arise. We’re not hating at all, in fact, we love those cars that manufacturers squeeze every last bit of performance out of… no matter the circumstances.

One of these said platforms is the Coyote. The 302 cubic-inch five-oh engine has quite the fan base thanks to its instant power and its love for boost. Ford built it pretty tough (…get it?) but, well, then the aftermarket got ahold of it. In the ’11-’19 Mustang, it’s paired with a weak link: not-so-tough oil pump gears. “The Coyote oil pump gears have kind of got a bad wrap for failing, and severely damaging the engine when that happens,” explains Justin at VMP Performance.

It’s said that whenever enthusiasts are getting over (or even approaching) the 700-horsepower mark, they should seriously consider upgrading their stock oil pump gears. It seems the thinner, outer metal gear is quite susceptible to breakage and excessive wear, while the inner gear is a little bit more solid. Sure, the OE gears are probably just fine for stock vehicles and those with a couple of bolt-ons, but for heavily modified builds, this is just another part you should add to your upgrade list once you’re pushing that additional horsepower. Trashing the factory setup and throwing in an aftermarket billet product essentially solves these wear issues, and provides peace of mind for those that are constantly worrying about their engine’s health.

VMP Performance Part Number: VMP-OPG001

We’re sure you’ve heard of VMP Performance before–they’re huge in the Ford community and, just recently, they started offering one of these upgraded sets of oil pump gears. We’re sure countless hours went into the development of the OE setup, but it obviously wasn’t made for the aftermarket world. VMPs were. Unlike the brittle OE parts, the billet version is CNC machined from high-quality hardened steel. While the matched inner and outer gears are direct replacements, every single part of them has been carefully inspected to ensure an even better fit than factory – virtually one-upping your existing setup in every possible way.
