It’s no secret that the 5.4-liter DOHC V8 found under the hood of the ’07-’12 Shelby GT500 is a powerhouse, both in stock and modified form. Heck, in stock, the ’07-’09 iteration was rated at 500 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. For the 2010 version, power was increased to 540 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque, with the ’11-’12 models seeing the addition of an aluminum block and an increase of 10 horsepower.
So, no matter which version you went with (that includes the 5.8-liter version with its 662 horsepower and 631 lb-ft of torque rating), you were guaranteed to have a robust starting point for any serious engine build. That said, we’re brought to this 1967 Ford F-100 from our friends at VMP Performance out of New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
During this year’s NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl event in Joliet, Illinois, Alejandro Flores of VMP Performance had the pleasure of tuning this GT500 5.4-swapped classic Blue Oval truck. Paired with VMP’s own Gen2 2.3-liter TVS supercharger, this Shelby-powered truck putdown an impressive 721 horsepower and 695 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels on VMP’s mobile dyno.
Paired with the factory Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual transmission found in the ’07-’14 Shelby GT500, one can only assume this Mustang-inspired truck has to be one wicked ride.
“It made 721 horsepower and 695 lb-ft of torque in an F-100 that probably weighs, I don’t know, probably 3,500 pounds,” Alejandro laughed. “This thing is not safe – not legal – or at least it shouldn’t be!”
