eBay Find: The Legendary Pony – A 1966 Mustang GT K-Code

American Pharaoh may have just one the Triple Crown but he pales in comparison to this noble steed. With its lava red paint job, shining chrome, sleek lines, GT performance, and the ultra-rare K-Code option, this 1966 Mustang GT is the real Triple Crown winner.

Despite its age, it has performance that rivals most cars on the road today, thanks to a 271 horsepower 289 HiPo V8 engine. The mill is mostly stock, including the original heads, but has an aftermarket Holley carb, a dual-point distributor and a chrome air cleaner to please the eye. The 289 is mated to a Toploader 4-speed manual transmission which is perfect for hard launches and bang shifting through the gears. The Toploader runs to a 9-inch rear with Posi-trac 3.50 gears.

The motor exhales through a custom dual exhaust system with headers and a pair of Magnaflow mufflers providing the driver with a rockin’ soundtrack. Its pristine wood grain interior with its metal pedals, bucket seats, and four speed shifter takes you from 2015 and tosses you back to a stop light race in 1969.

For those who are unaware, the K-Code was a special order factory package that added a High Performance version of the 289 cubic inch motor more commonly known as the 289 HiPo. These mills made 271 horses and were only available with four speed manuals until 1966. For those years, the car could only be ordered with manual steering and no AC as the K-Code Stangs were spartan, no frills musclecars designed strictly for performance. The car is listed for sale on eBay with a tag of $45,900. The K-Codes hold a special place in Mustang fans hearts and with only 13,214 ever made, making each one an important piece of American history.
