I can tell you personally this is one of the toughest decisions my son has had to make in his young life. — Rick Newman

Restoring a car from the ground-up is without no easy task, but when you’re motivated to make a young man’s dreams come true in the process, the line between work and play begins to blur from passion and response. Such was the case with Brycen Newman and his family. A San Diego, California, teenager, Brycen was diagnosed with brain cancer back in 2015 when he was just 15 years old.

More than two years later, Brycen is now cancer free, and the recipient of a fully restored 1966 Ford Mustang coupe. Brought to us via Bring A Trailer, Brycen had the pleasure of working with the Make A Wish foundation after hearing about his story. The organization was able to work with Mustang guru Ed Hanson of Hanson’s Muffler Service in San Diego to create Brycen’s dream car.

Fast forward more than two years later, and Brycen is now healthy after multiple surgeries and chemotherapy treatments. While he hasn’t thoroughly enjoyed his classic ’Stang, clocking only 100 miles on it since the restoration, now is the time for Brycen to let this pony go to a new owner.

If you’re curious as to why, Brycen’s family has decided to help the teenager pursue a college education, which of course requires some extra funds. Brycen is also looking for a daily driver with some creature comforts, and feels he would be doing his ’Stang a disservice if he weren’t able to maintain it properly.

Brycen Newman’s fully restored ’66 Mustang is up for sale.

“Thank you so much for stopping by and looking at my son’s car,” Brycen’s dad, Rick Newman, said in the sale listing. “I can tell you personally this is one of the toughest decisions my son has had to make in his young life. He loves the car and it rides so smooth basically like a brand-new car. Thank you to everyone who worked to make this possible for him. Bryce loves the car so much, that in order for it to stay in this condition he realized he has to sell it because we don’t have the funds or knowledge to keep it in the condition it is in today.”

Brycen’s Mustang is powered by a classic 289ci small-block — simple, easy and affordable. The engine was built by ACME Hot Rods, paired to a rebuilt C4 automatic from Valley Transmission. Induction comes from a four-barrel, 500-cfm Edelbrock carburetor.

Want to get all of the details on this custom, restored ’66 Mustang? The auction ends next week, so checkout the original ad on Bring A Trailer here for more information. Remember, all of the proceeds of the sale will be donated to Brycen and his family.

Through the magic of time and a community effort, this ’66 Mustang — which was originally powered by an inline-six-cylinder engine — was transformed into the V8-powered coupe you see before you. Ed Hanson, of Hanson's Muffler Service, headed most of the work, while all of the sheetmetal was painted in Deep Metallic Blue under white and Electric Blue racing stripes by SoCal Paint Works. Inside, the seats have been reupholstered in "factory-style materials," which include black vinyl seats, all-new carpeting and a fresh headliner. The package is tailored with a new custom Kenwood stereo and speaker system.
