Another Gone In 60 Seconds “Hero Car” Up For Auction

2013 has been a banner year for collectible Mustangs, with record after record falling as sky-high prices are paid for running and driving pieces of automotive history. This included the $1.3 million high-bid on a unique 1967 Shelby Super Snake and more than $1 million for the “hero” Eleanor Mustang that starred in the Gone in 60 Seconds remake.

Well get ready for Round 2, with another Eleanor Mustang from the Nicolas Cage thriller up for grabs this October at Mecum’s Chicago auction. While it’s unlikely to break the million-dollar mark, this movie star is still sure to bring some serious coin.

Like the original Gone in 60 Seconds, the remake went through hundreds of cars for the thrash-about car theft and chase scenes that made the movie such a hit. Penned by famous hot rod designer Steve Stanford, the Eleanor Mustang was an instant hit with the muscle car crowd, and many a college dorm room and mancave is graced by posters of this sleek and sexy Mustang.

For the movie a total of 10 Eleanor Mustangs were built, with this being #7 and coming with a Certificate of Authenticity. It was one of the 3 cars used for scenes with the actual actors, meaning it had to be in the best shape. It also happens to have a Ford Racing 351 cubic-inch engine, backed by a beefy four-speed manual transmission and posi-traction.

Lot number S178 will cross the block at approximately 4:30 PM Central time, Saturday October 12. What it will fetch at auction is anyone’s guess, as this year has proven to be a good one for classic car collectors. What’s your top bid on this piece of Mustang and movie history?
