Everyone knows that machining items from one solid piece of aluminum creates some of the most gorgeous parts that the automotive industry has ever seen. However, some billet parts are more than just eye candy, as is the case with Plazmaman Coyote 5.0-liter billet intake manifold.

Designing custom intake manifolds since 1985, out of Sydney, Australia, Plazmaman has extensive experience in the field, with more than 65 applications covered and numerous records in numerous racing classes around the globe. Their experience in some of the highest forms of motorsports shows in their designs, and their reach extends across the ocean, as their billet LS intakes are wildly popular in the United States.

This particular intake application came to fruition after constant inquiries from the Ford Coyote market. “The Coyote guys hounded us to release one,” says Alex Michalsky, President of Plazmaman. “Our LS and big-block Chevy intakes are taking off worldwide-we sold over 500 units of the LS intakes to the USA last year alone, and the 5.0 guys wanted one too.”

Requiring nearly 30 hours of CNC-machining time per manifold, the Plazmaman Billet Coyote Intake can be correctly referred to as a work of art.

With the market demand there-mainly from the US, although Australia does have a contingent of Coyote enthusiasts- The Plazmaman team got to work on designing this gorgeous work of art. “It took 6 months and 3 engineers working together,” Michalsky says. “These intakes were primarily designed around boosted applications, however naturally-aspirated applications will also see gains with engine work and a performance tune is applied.”

While a piece of eye-candy, without a doubt, aesthetics are just a secondary benefit of the design, as Plazmaman is interested in performance first. “The Ford Performance plastic items were buckling under boost , so strength was our main goal,” explains Michalsky. “We use the same airflow modelling Formula 1 teams use to get the basics correct. However, I feel that 30-plus years of experience in intake building are far better than any computer.” That combination of the latest computational flow dynamics software combined with real-world experience is tough to beat.

Machined from two solid blocks of aluminum (one for the upper half, and one for the lower half) this intake takes approximately 30 hours of machine time to produce. Once machined, the parts are then anodized, inside and out, for both looks and protection. “Anodizing is a corrosion inhibitor aginast oxidization of the alloy, and it also protects the aluminum against race fuel corrosion and staining,” Michalsky explains.

The final product has a wide variety of options available to the end user. Available with the standard eight-injector configuration, Plazmaman offers a sixteen-injector option, for really high-horsepower applications. There are four throttle-body options offered, including the OEM 90mm drive-by-wire, a 102mm LS-style drive-by-wire, and then two mechanical-cable-actuated 100mm in-house Plazmaman throttle-bodies with two different cable clamp styles.

Three different Throttle Position Sensor options, along with an optional SFI-approved burst panel round out the options available on this manifold. Separate from the intake, but also included are a set of billet Plazmaman fuel rails to compliment the configuration of either eight on sixteen injectors. Finally, the protective layer of anodizing is available in either black or clear, or a two-tone configuration with a black upper and silver runners. And to top it all off, the manifold fits nicely under the stock bonnet, err… hood.

While not inexpensive by any stretch of the imagination, the first batch of the new-to-market intake disappeared fast. “We got over ten orders by the first night release, so we are snowed under already,” laughs Michalsky. “The first batch is long gone.” Apparently, Coyote owners are a hungry bunch.

In addition to performance, there are also some built in convenience features. On the left, the throttle body mounting plate can be changed to one of three flanges, to utilize the OEM drive-by-wire Coyote throttle body, an LS drive-by-wire throttle body, or one of Plazmaman's two in-house-designed throttle bodies with mechanical linkage. On the right, one built-in 1/4 NPT and two 1/8 NPT bungs make boost and/or vacuum reference points exceedingly easy.
