2015 F-150 Seamless Rear Window Exposed

2015 F-150

Not long ago, we brought you Ford Motor Company’s pricing on the all-new aluminum 2015 Ford F-150. The newest Ford truck is a thing of beauty (at least we think so) and has some really cool added features including the segment-first seamless sliding rear window.

All-New F-150 Seamless Sliding Rear WindowGone are the days of those pesky seam-like bars down the length of rear windows and in their place, a seamless design, which creates a smooth and aesthetically pleasing facade.

“Delivering the latest in innovation and technology to our customer is a top priority for Ford,” said Noah Mass, Ford body mechanisms manager. “The seamless sliding rear window is another great example of the intricate detail that goes into producing the next-generation F-150, setting it apart from any pickup on the market today.”

As you know, standard sliding rear windows have typically been composed of three pieces of glass–the middle piece made to slide open and closed with stationary pieces on either side. This design required a support structure made of numerous components, while the new design uses only two pieces of glass and features an opening equal to the size of the previous design.

It isn’t all about looks though. The design allows for continuous and uninterrupted defrost capabilities for the stationary glass. It also contributes to the new F-150’s awesome 700-pound weight loss, as the window control module is lighter than that of the old design.

The design was developed by global automotive supplier Magna International with Ford, and has, according to Ford, set the precedent for power sliders by “reducing component needs and improving overall functionality and manufacturing efficiency.”

“We designed the seamless sliding rear window to deliver not only a new look and improved functionality, but also to start a trend in the truck sliding window market,” said Troy Tooker, design engineering manager for Magna International. “With pickup sliders being one of our core products, we wanted to show our leadership and raise the bar on the new F-150.”
