PRI 2016: AEM AQ-1, Data Logging Made Easy & Affordable

AEM-AQ1-OBDII-PRI-2016-01

When we caught up with AEM Performance at the PRI Show, the AQ-1 Data Logging System (PN 30-2500) was the thing everyone was talking about. At under $550, it is definitely affordable but it is also extremely capable in a variety of applications and uses. It logs up to 32GB at 1,000 samples/second. Up to 8 channels and three inputs provide data, which can be viewed using AEM’s free data analysis software. You can even expand upon that using AEMNet and AEM’s other hardware. In addition, it has a 3-axis accelerometer, GPS input (RS232 serial port), track mapping, and the ability to overlay data onto video and output in HD.

The AEM AQ-1 packs an awful lot into a small package. The unit itself is only 4.80×4.55×1.44 inches. The first four channels are designed for 0-5v sensors as well as RTD/thermal sensors including: air/fuel ratio, boost, boost after intercooler, boost before intercooler, MAP, crankcase pressure, fuel pressure, oil pressure, clutch pressure, brake pressure, shock travel, air temperature, coolant temperature, trans temperature, and EGT. The next four can be used for 0-5v sensors as well, or 0-16.5v sensors such as: RPM, driveshaft speed, or wheel speed. The three switched inputs include: clutch, nitrous, brake and cooling fan. OBD-II connectivity was added for this year (PN 30-2501), which provides even more data.

You may be thinking to yourself, how would I use all of that data? Well, thankfully AEM provided us with a few ideas. In drag racing you can view oil and fuel pressure to monitor starvation at launch. By comparing longitudinal G-forces and wheel slip, you can find the optimum slip percentage. For torque converter slip, you can compare driveshaft speed with engine RPM. There are similar uses in road racing, but with the added benefit of using it as a means of timing equipment and lap comparison. Adjust your driving style, braking, or the car itself to turn faster laps.

The CD-7 Digital Racing Dash Display, Vehicle Dynamics Module, High Output Direct Fit V8 Ignition Coils, Infinity Series 3 ECU, and AEMnet to NMEA Digital Gateway were also new for this year. For information on these products and more, visit AEMElectronics.com.
