Kindig-It Designs’ ’68 BOSS Mustang Is Nothing Short of Amazing

Last week we showed off a neat project that Dave Kindig and his team at Kindig-It Design are working on, and in the process we learned more about the team at Kindig-It and what they do. Specifically, they create incredible hot rods, and this 1968 BOSS Mustang is just one of the machines that’s taken shape in their Salt Lake City facility.

boss8Every aspect of the car has been touched upon in a redesign that, quite simply, is nothing short of stunning in every sense of the word. The Kindig-It fabrication team started out with a shell of a car that wasn’t even complete, then added a frame kit from Art Morrison, which was customized in-house it to their liking. The frame was built into the unibody, which features a hood that’s been stretched three inches and a hand-built underhood structure.

The front fascia and fender flares are also hand-built, there’s a full belly pan, and the rockers have also been modified to be 1.25 inches taller than stock for an incredibly unique look. In addition, the exterior of the car has been shaved for smoothness, and the Kindig-It team installed a set of their own custom smooth door handles, which add yet another level of classic design to the exterior of this BOSS.

Using an old-school hot rod trick, the lights have been frenched into the exterior to complete the smooth look, and Porsche White paint with gray stripes has been applied to every inch of the surface. LED lighting is used throughout the exterior of the car to provide that modern look.

boss6 (Custom)Underneath the car, a four-link rear suspension was installed along with a Fab 9 nine-inch rearend. A complete set of Wilwood‘s six-piston, 14.5-inch rotors sits at all four corners, providing all the stopping power an owner could ever want.  They hide behind a massive set of 20×8.5-inch front and 24×14.5-inch rear wheels from Intro that have been wrapped in a set of Pirelli  245/35/20 and “do-these-really exist” 405/25/24 (!) rear tires.

Of course, since it’s a Ford, they decided to stick with Ford power to top off the package. To that end, a 418-cubic-inch small-block is motivated by one of ATI’s intercooled ProCharger F-1 units, running through a Tremec T56 six-speed manual transmission. According to Kindig, the total package makes 992 hp at the crankshaft and sounds absolutely insane. MSD‘s ignition lights off the fire, and the real jewel of the power-production arena is the set of killer stainless-steel Kindig-It hand-built zoomie headers that exit at the bottom of the front fenders  – these things just scream “get out of the way”!

The interior boasts the same level of modification as the exterior and underhood areas. Custom-dyed leather has been applied to nearly every surface and installed by JS Custom Interiors. Krist Kustoms supplied the seats, and the one-off black leather steering wheel comes from LeCarra and spins on a Flaming River steering column.

An interesting touch comes with the use of the retrofitted 2005 Mustang dashboard that has been modified to fit a set of gauges from Classic Instruments – this stuff is just on another level altogether, and a supreme example of the craftsmanship evident throughout the build – just incredible. The car also has a complete Vintage Air Gen II compact HVAC system.

No custom hot rod build would be complete without a badass entertainment system, and this BOSS relies on a JVC head unit that has a built-in DVD player and navigation system. JL Audio speakers are strategically placed throughout the cabin, and an Optima battery ensures there’s enough juice to go around.

This is truly a one-of-a-kind build that illustrates what happens when money isn’t an object. The Kindig-It design and fabrication teams have proven their skills on this build, creating a ride that any Mustang owner would be proud to have in the garage. This incredible piece of automotive art has numerous show wins under its belt to date since its debut in 2009.
