2013 Ford Fusion Brings Turbos to the Table

We all love the Ford Mustang, and muscle cars in general, but let’s be honest; most people aren’t in the market for a two-door, V8-powered sports coupe. It is far less practical than say, a mid-size four-door sedan that remains one of the most popular car segments in America. For the last two decades, Honda and Toyota have dominated this segment as the Big Three focused on high-profit SUV’s. But a new day is upon us in the mid-size car market, and the 2013 Ford Fusion, with not one but two turbocharged engine choices to aiming to bring excitement, style, and a whole lotta technology into this once-beige market.

The first thing you notice about the 2013 Ford Fusion is just how much it looks like the Evos Concept that debuted last fall. Ford really took the best styling cues from the Evos (namely the front and rear fascias) and molded them into a sleek, swooping body style that is both beautiful and powerful. With the exception perhaps of the new Hyundai Sonata, the 2013 Ford Fusion blows away the design of any other mid-size automobile. And with not one, but two turbocharged engine options, the 2013 Fusion is set to leave them behind on the street as well.

There are actually three engines to choose from; a 170 horsepower, 170 ft-lb torque 2.5 liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder. Next up is a 1.6 liter EcoBoost with 179 horsepower and 172 ft-lbs of torque. Finally there’s the big dog, a 2.0 liter EcoBoost with 237 horsepower and 250 ft-lbs of torque. Only the 1.6 liter EcoBoost will be available with a six-speed manual transmission (the other engines will receive automatics) though the 2.0 liter EcoBoost model will also be offered with all-wheel drive, in a package that screams power and poise.

Now if you have no interest in fuel economy, you can stop reading here. But, if you are interested in fuel economy, the 2013 Fusion will offer a Hybrid model with 47 mpg city and 44 mpg highway. Those are some pretty potent numbers, but if you’re looking for even more fuel efficiency, the 2013 Fusion Energi will offer 100 MPGe (equivalent) and an as-yet-undetermined all-electric range. The Fusion Energi will offer up to 500 miles of driving range on a single tank of gas, leaving you more money to pour into performance parts for your Mustang (or other, less-cool muscle car.)

Speaking of the Mustang, we’ve already covered all the nitty-gritty details, but here is something new; Gotta Have it Green is a new color option, bringing a bold new look to the Boss 302 model and re-igniting memories of Grabber Green from the original 1970 Boss Mustangs.
