Record-Setting ’Stang Takes American Sedan Southeast Championship

We are used to seeing the original pony car claim victories at all levels of racing, but those triumphs are especially sweet when they come at the expense of its oldest rivals. That’s just the way it went down as Thomas Ellis brought home the 2018 SCCA American Sedan Southeast Conference Points Championship in his Steeda-backed 2004 Mustang.

Thomas competed in American Sedan races in the Southeast. Only the best eight races count toward the championship with the top 20 finishers in each race earning points, ranging from 25 for the winner and one point for the 20th finisher.

“On his way to the season title, Thomas set two national lap records for the American Sedan class, turning the quickest recorded lap at both Sebring International Raceway and Homestead-Miami Speedway,” his sponsor Steeda explained. “The season points fight came down to a five-way tie for the lead, and Thomas’ number of finishes earned him the top spot.”

In getting there, he bested another Mustang as well as a Cadillac CTS-V and a Chevrolet Camaro Z28 that were also in the hunt.

To help collect those records, wins, and championship, Thomas runs the full complement of Steeda suspension gear, including its Five-Link Rear Suspension. The latter part of the setup is designed to correct the handling ills of the factory four-link, and it definitely worked in this application.
