Nitrous systems made a huge leap in popularity in the Fox Mustang’s heyday. It seems every other Fox had nitrous on it; from a 125 shot up to a 300 horsepower blast. There were plenty of guys that went straight for the 300 shot. Ain’t nobody got time for a 125 shot when the 300 horsepower pills are included in the packet.

Lethal Performance recently added a Nitrous Express (NX) High Output Plate nitrous system to its 2015 Mustang GT project car. With Power by the Hour doing the install, and Lund Racing’s Ken Bjonnes handling the tune, this was a can’t miss install.

Though the power adder isn’t quite as popular with the latest Mustangs, nitrous oxide is still a viable, and economical means of adding power to your Mustang. Nitrous is still immensely popular with the drag racing crowd, but with the latest road-going Mustangs, it seems superchargers and turbochargers have taken over the market. However, when a turbocharger or supercharger kit is priced at $5,000-$7,000, or more, suddenly a nitrous system sounds really nice.

On a dark night, you might be able to get away with telling someone your '15 Mustang GT is simply carrying a JLT Performance cold air, and exhaust. What they don't know see won't hurt 'em.

The NX High Output Plate nitrous system is available for $833. That’s a lot less than a supercharger or turbocharger kit. The NX system features an auto-learn TPS switch, allowing the nitrous to activate at WOT.

Furthermore, a fuel line adapter makes quick work of fuel line connections, and the system includes NX’s Lightning series nitrous and fuel solenoids, a billet aluminum nitrous plate, and a 10-pound bottle. This kit is available with a 12- and 15-pound bottle, as well, and for horsepower levels ranging from 50-250 horsepower.

Lethal chose the 150 horsepower jets for this exercise, and the dyno numbers didn’t disappoint. With nitrous, you know it’s going to bring torque to the party, and this kit combined with the 2015’s Coyote engine, it was par for the course.

For traction insurance, Power by the Hour also installed a JMS Chip & Performance Progressive Nitrous Controller. The Nitrous Express kit will work as intended at WOT, but the JMS controller was added to further control at what rpm the nitrous would hit and the system’s ramp rate, as well. If one was to hit all 150 horsepower at a low speed on a street tire, tire spin would most likely be an issue. However, with the JMS controller you can control how much, and how fast, the nitrous is applied to the engine.

Of course, before we tell you what it made we should tell you Power by the Hour added Brisk Racing Iridium spark plugs one heat range colder than stock. Also, a bottle heater was added to help maintain optimum bottle pressure. Both of these items are must-haves when adding nitrous to your Mustang, and will help you get the most out of your NX nitrous system. And of course, don’t forget about the JMS Chip & Performance progressive nitrous controller, as well.

So you’ve read all that to arrive right here. You might have skipped all that and came straght here, though. We can’t really blame you there. Lethal’s 2015 GT with the 150 horsepower jets made 542 hp and 589 lb-ft of torque. We told you nitrous made torque.

The baseline numbers, with just a JLT Performance cold air, a Lund Racing tune, and Lethal’s resonator delete were 408 and 389, respectively. At the peak, the 150 horsepower jets provided 134 additional horsepower to the rear tires, but below the horsepower peak, the nitrous delivered almost 160 more horsepower and 225 more lb-ft of torque.

Lethal’s 2015 GT made the same horsepower, and probably more torque, than many forced induction equipped Mustangs we’ve seen so far, for way less money. We’re not knocking turbos or blowers because we love them just as much as nitrous, but when it comes to bang for your buck, you can’t touch nitrous as a viable power adder for your Mustang.
