What We Know About 2015 Mustang Packages And Models

While the 2015 Mustang has been known to the public for nearly five months now, Ford has been very quiet about many of the details on this new car. We know that a more powerful Coyote 5.0 engine is in the works, with revisions to the intake, cylinder heads, and camshafts. We also know that there will be an EcoBoost turbo four cylinder, making at least 305 hp, probably more. We also know that there will be a base V6 model. It’s also been confirmed that there will be no special moniker for the EcoBoost model, no SVO badge.

The rest is up in the air and has spawned a great deal of internet speculation about what special models there will be for 2015. So let’s take a look at what we do know.

Aside from the GT, EcoBoost and base V6, we can be 99 percent certain of a GT350 model, after seeing that information leaked by a dealer. A GT350 would appear to be the only additional special model based on the Mustang to be offered.

GT350, Mach 1, Terminator

There’s been speculation of a new Terminator Cobra, Mach 1, and others. While any of these models would be cool, in the past they were different enough to get their own promotional materials from Ford and they were in fact different models. We’d say no to a Cobra, because the GT350 is all but officially confirmed, and a more powerful Cobra might get in the way of sales, at least for 2015. We expect the GT350 to offer performance that is on par with the previous GT500, but only time will tell.

The same goes for a Mach 1 package. The last Mach 1 was the 2004 model, featuring a DOHC engine, and live rear axle. This burnout inspiring Mustang got a lot of marketing attention from Ford and much like the Cobra was not a dolled up GT option package. It could be that there will be a Mach 1 appearance package for the GT models, but just another stripe and sticker add on would be a great disappointment since the last Mach 1 was such a unique and special car to many enthusiasts. We have also seen reports where Ford has quietly said that there is no Mach 1 for 2015.

We still don’t know what the Voodoo engine is going in. This could be the new 5.0 for the GT350, featuring forced induction. It could also be naturally aspirated, or it could be reserved for the Cobra Jet program. There are too many “could be” scenarios for what will power the GT350 to make that determination yet. And the Voodoo engine is too wrapped in secrecy at the moment for us to speculate what this engine will end up in.

Anniversary

Last week we published a few spy photos from Mustang6g of what is reported to be a 50th anniversary Mustang. This would make sense, and a 50th anniversary appearance package could be spec’d out as an option for almost any Mustang model, GT, EcoBoost or V6. Ford did that with the 40th anniversary package 10 years ago, and we’ve seen a lot more V6 40th anniversary models than GTs.

Unfortunately anniversary models have always been about stickers, wheels, colors, and stripes, and never about adding anything to the performance of the cars. While these are often aesthetically pleasing cars, they’re not much more than that, so don’t expect the 50th model to set any records in terms of performance.

Bullitt

Recently we saw a few scattered reports that included spy photos of what could be a Bullitt Mustang. The Bullitt cars of the New Edge generation were really something special, with a number of features both aesthetically and in performance to differentiate them from the GT. The Bullitt model that ran just a few years ago on the S197 platform was more of an appearance package with better exhaust than anything on the standard GT, which left us audibly pleased sorely disappointed in terms of performance.

Looking to capitalize on sales of the new model Ford could be offering a new Bullitt option code on the GTs, which might delete some badging, add a unique wheel package and possibly something like an exhaust upgrade. We doubt that there will be much more in terms of performance. The car caught in spy photos may have just been an EcoBoost with a different wheel package running around in the guard color. Since Ford did not list Hyland Green as a color option for 2015 it’s almost a certainty that there is no Bullitt for 2015.

We’re fairly certain at this point that the 2015 Mustang lineup will include a V6, EcoBoost, GT, and GT350, as well as a 50th anniversary appearance package for a limited number of GT, EcoBoost and V6 cars. Could there be anything else hiding over at Ford marketing? Certainly, however, until Ford unveils it even our breakdown is only based on the facts we know so far. Only time will tell which internet rumors are right, and who was wrong. The speculation behind what will be offered is as hotly contested right now as the details on what the 2015 would look like were six months ago.
