MSN.com recently conducted an online survey to choose the greatest muscle car in history. The 1967 Shelby GT500 Mustang was selected by site readers as the top muscle car of all time. Site visitors cast more than 6,000 votes or 17 percent of the total for the specialty Mustang.

In 1967, the Shelby GT500 first appeared, equipped with the 428 Police Interceptor. Unlike the track-oriented GT350, which sacrificed many creature comforts for speed, the GT500 was a boulevard cruiser and popular for that. The 428 cui engine was only available in full size cars from Ford.

In Shelby’s hands, they added a cast-aluminum medium-rise intake manifold from the 427 V8, twin 600-cfm Holley 4-barrel carburetors and other tweaks for a conservative rating of 355 bhp – 10 hp more than Ford’s claim. Always searching for distinction, the updated 1967 Mustang exterior was modified with an elongated nose, a hood with functional scoops, and four body side scoops.

The rear end received a molded spoiler and sequential turn-signal lamps from the Mercury Cougar. High-beam headlights were mounted in the center of the grille, although some were moved to the sides to meet state requirements. All 1967 Shelby GT 500s sported Mustang GT interior trim. An 8000-rpm tach, 140-mph speedometer and padded roll bar were fitted by Shelby.

The new look of the 1967 Mustang, enhanced for power, handling and looks, served to propel this iconic pony car to the top of MSN’s all time list. Here’s the list of the top-10 Muscle Cars in history.
