The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8 is a formidable vehicle; the all-wheel drive powertrain gets the car off the line with quickness, and the turbocharged 4G63 engine took the car to published 5.1-second 0-60 times off the showroom floor. The 4G63 responds well to modifications, and the cars quickly found homes all throughout the US once Mitsu decided to ship the cars here back in the early ’00s.
The footage in this video is shot on the streets of Philadelphia, on a road your author is quite familiar with as he spent many late nights there.
This particular Evo is boasting an IX turbo swap, new camshafts, and 21 pounds of boost. But as we find out in this video, it’s no match for a Hellion twin-turbocharged Coyote Mustang.
Round one has the Evo8 lined up against the Mustang on the street, at night, for a single Benjamin. The Evo jumps out to a large advantage on the starting line, which is typical of an all-wheel-drive rocket like the Evo8. But the rice-rocket owner quickly finds out what happens when twin 62mm turbochargers fill up the Mustang’s 5.0L Coyote engine with boost – a drive-by shooting that hasn’t been seen since Tupac met his untimely end on the streets of Las Vegas.
Not satisfied with losing his lunch money, Mr. Evo tries again, for a smaller amount of money, and the results are the same as the Evo loses an intercooler tube at the top of second gear; all the driver can do is watch the Mustang run away with his money for a second time.
Although we still don’t condone street racing, it’s fun to watch a Mustang do what a Mustang does – decimate the competition.
