Formula Drift, a sport with origins in Japan, has become a thoroughly American sport. Today’s Formula Drift events are dominated by American muscle cars, and in 2010 it was Ford Mustang driver Vaughn Gittin Jr. who took home the championship, catapulting him into international stardom. That’s allowed Gittin to pursue projects like the RTR Mustang and has led to his appearance in several video game titles.
The latest item to bear a resemblance to Gittin’s famous Monster Energy/Falken Tire 5.0 Mustang is a limited edition HPI remote control drift car. Just 5,000 of these little buggers will be made, and K&N Filters is giving away five of them to a few lucky fans. But best of all? There’s a video with Vaughn Gittin Jr. chasing a miniature version of his Mustang, and it’s as awesome as you were hoping.
The pursuit takes place in and around K&N’s California factory, and the drifting action is everything you’d expect from a star like Gittin. We can’t imagine how much planning went into this production, but suffice to say there are plenty of impressive points where Mustang and miniature come within inches of each other. We were waiting and waiting for the sickening crunch of crushed remote control car but it never came. But the RC Mustang does take an adorable detour through K&N’s assembly line and conveyor system before coming face to face with its full-sized foe.
Want in on the action? K&N is giving away five of these RC Mustangs to fans who head over to their Facebook page and enter the contest, which is open until March 1st. There are just 190 entries so far, so the odds are in your favor…for now.
