Among the elite few who happen to own the Ford GT supercar, there is a trend towards twin-turbocharging the 5.4 liter V8. For some people, 550 horsepower from the supercharger just isn’t enough. So they go and strap on two power-packing snails that’s usually good for between 800 and 1,100 horsepower.) All that horsepower needs to be kept in check though, lest it let loose and wreck havoc on your expensive supercar.
Jalopnik came across this video taken by some TexasSupras.com forum members of the Dallas Performance DP1000 Ford GT bursting into a very expensive bonfire, and right now there are more questions than answers.
The car belongs to a fellow named Kumar, and is one of a pair from Texas painted white with light blue stripes featuring twin turbos and about 1,000 horsepower. Kumar’s car, which is a frequent participant in the Texas Mile, also features an inflammatory license plate that says “F ENZO” (how did that get through the DMV?) It’s a serious car with a lot of money put into it, and then something happened.
There aren’t many details yet, except that the car was sitting at a red light in traffic when the trouble started. There were signs of smoke, and by the time the occupants reached for a fire extinguisher, there was a loud, gunshot sound. The occupants than saw flames and felt the heat and then got the hell out of the car, and within 30 seconds the whole thing was up in smoke. We may never know what happened, but a car can be replaced, even an uber-sexy, expensive, and ridiculously overpowered car like Kumar’s.
