If you’re reading these pages, you either own, have owned, or dream of owning a brand new Mustang. Sadly for many of us, a dream is all we have right now, or at best a test drive around the local Ford dealership. Most dealers aren’t going to let you take the Mustang for a hot lap around a race track either, at least not until you’ve signed a lot of paperwork. There is, however, another option.
Ford has released an interactive, multi-viewpoint video of the 2015 Mustang GT lapping the famous Silverstone raceway in the United Kingdom. The 80-second film allows viewers to take a 360 degree view of the Mustang’s cockpit thanks to the use of six GoPro cameras, as well as a road-scraping outlook thanks to a bumper-mounted camera. There’s even a bird’s eye view provided by a drone so you can see the action from the outside. We’ve posted a non-interactive version above, but you can watch the full interactive version by following this link.
“This video is a lot of fun, it makes you feel like you’re behind the wheel of a Mustang,” said Tom Barnes, Mustang vehicle engineering manager, Barnes has spent countless hours on the track developing the new Mustang. “You have complete control of your view as if you’re actually driving on the track.”
Veteran driver Paul Swift was at the helm as the Mustang cruised through the legendary 1.6 mile race course in less than 80 seconds. Viewers can also see the Mustang’s speed and rev counter accurately displayed, thanks to seamless editing and dedication to detail. It’s about as close to racing Silverstone as most of us will ever come.
