Yankees versus Red Sox. Republicans versus Democrats. Paper versus plastic. America is filled with a lot of rivalries, but perhaps none as heated as Ford versus Chevy. The two biggest American automakers have gone tit for tat in every single car segment, from compacts to muscle cars and of course, pickups. Often times this carried over into television commercials, with the competitors calling each other right now.
But how far is too far? You decide, after watching this outtake from a Ford commercial entitled “Stunts.” Beware, the video has some rather foul language. And yet we find ourselves wishing Ford would show this kind of chutzpah in their modern social media marketing efforts.
The actor is a well traveled fellow by the name of Michael Skewes. He’s never had a major movie role, but he has probably been in more than one movie you’ve seen before. In this role, as your middle American ambassador, Skewes talks about the “stunts” Chevy is pulling in their advertising efforts, which is a pretty damn direct call out. It’s just not that funny.
Then it gets kinda goofy. We won’t write down the naughty, naughty words Mr. Skewes unleashes, but let us just say that it’s not the kind of language you should use around a lady. These days, Ford is concentrating on reaching out to fans via social media, but their advertisements as of late have been more about taking on Toyota then Chevy and it is all so…wholesome. Ford has a lot to brag about too; the best lineup in years, not taking bailout money, and some pretty impressive motorsports ventures. Yet they remain quiet. Whatever works, we guess.
