On the 40^th anniversary of the legendary Boss 302 Mustangs Trans Am victory, Ford unveiled the Boss 302R Mustang, a race-ready factory track car. Since then, Ford has brought the Boss name back in a big way with the 2012 Boss 302 Mustang and the Laguna Seca Edition. But what of the 302R? It had limited success on the track during last year’s Grand Am series, and next year it is set to be replaced by the next iteration, the Boss 302S.

Ford Racing has released footage of the new 302S testing at Homestead-Miami raceway. The three-minute video delivers plenty of fast-paced footage and that sweet symphony of the 5.0 liter V8 engine.

Ford took the 302S out on to the track to test various elements of the new Mustang 302S. As this is a race-bred car, every element must be factored in to ensure they are getting the most horsepower possible on a consistent basis, and that the engine (as well as the rest of car) can stand up to the rigors of road racing. Specifically, Ford engineers were testing out the new launch control feature, the pit lane speed limiter, as well as different tire compounds.

With speeds topping 150 mph, everything must work perfectly lest driver and crew face a catastrophic failure at high speed. This is in many ways the ultimate Boss Mustang, outdoing even the Laguna Seca Edition Boss 302. Production of the Boss 302S Mustang is scheduled to begin in the 2^nd quarter of 2011, and we should see it hitting the track in full force around the beginning of 2012. Until then, we can listen to the awesome mechanical music of this unbridled beast.
