Last weekend was the epic Texas Mile, a top speed run that draws the fastest cars and fattest wallets to an open stretch of highway in Beeville, Texas. Since its inception in 2003, the Texas Mile has grown bigger and bigger, and so have the top speeds. Prior to last weekend’s engagement, the top speed had sat at 223 mph as recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records.

But that was before Mark Heidaker’s camouflaged Ford GT took to the Texas Mile with driver Sean Kennedy. There, the Hennessey twin-turbocharged engine running 117 octane set a new world record of 257 mph in the standing mile.

That shatters the old record, although it took a lot of work to get there. In past years Heidaker has run two turbochargers and a supercharger, but this year he opted for a more-efficient twin-turbo setup. Running at 34 pounds of boost and making an estimated 2,000 horsepower, Kennedy was able to hit 204 mph at the half-mile mark. At that kind of speed, it takes about 20 seconds to complete an entire mile (though obviously one has to build up those speeds first).

From start to chute, the Ford GT takes less than 30 seconds to reach its top speed. At a speed of 204 mph with a half-mile to go, Kennedy was able to wring out a blistering top speed from the Ford GT, hitting a Guinness-verified top speed of 257.7 mph. The next goal is to hit 260 mph in October, though we think it is fair to say that Heidaker and Hennessey have set an very high bar for any follow up.
