Not so long ago, the Australian V8 Supercar Series passed a ban on burnouts during the victory celebrations. Neither the fans nor the racers were happy about the ban, which was a bit of an Aussie racing tradition. In protest, the three winning racers did a burnout during the pull up to victory lane…and the burnout ban was dropped soon thereafter.
Thank goodness, because otherwise Jalopnik would not have come across this video of Shane Van Ginsberg drifting the entirety of the Hidden Valley Raceway after his victory this weekend.
Drifting is a sport that originated in Japan, and has since migrated across the Pacific to America. As far as we know, Formula Drift hasn’t made the jump into Australia yet, but the Aussies take their burnouts very seriously. And really, drifting isn’t anything but a sideways, moving burnout. 22-year old New Zealand native Van Ginsberg managed to pull out a victory, holding off veteran Craig Lowdes for his second V8 Supercar series win.
It was kind of a big deal, as Van Ginsberg regains his tenitive third place in the Driver’s Championship, so we can understand why he decided to drift around the track on his victory lap. Rumor has it that the V8 Supercar series wants to hold a race right here in America too, so this kind of hooning could be coming to our shores soon. We hope, we hope.
