Drag racing is quite simply an all-or-nothing race, where you give it all you’ve got or you go home empty-handed. These high-stakes races mean that an expensive accident could be just around the corner, and even the most experienced drivers can be caught in a pickle at high speeds.
This video comes to us from MotorManiaTV, and shows racer Robert Rodgers losing control of his nitrous-injected Mustang at the NWO Nationals last weekend at Georgia’s Silver Dollar Raceway. He wrestles with the car all the way down the strip, and though he still grazed the wall, it could have been a lot worse.
Rodgers was lined up in the right-hand lane against Walter Drakeford. It’s not obvious what went wrong, but Rodger’s Mustang pulls a big wheelstand before drifting towards Drakeford’s lane. After that, Rodgers overcorrects, sending the Mustang skating across the dragstrip backwards before spinning back around and just grazing the passenger’s side against the opposite wall.
While it sucks that Rodgers wasn’t able to completely save his Mustang from damage, that accident could have been a whole lot worse in ways we don’t want to imagine. It takes a steady hand and cool head to do what Rodgers did, and we’re pretty sure this really is a case of “that will buff out.”
