Video: Did Obama Call The GT500 “Sick”?

Politics is on a lot of peoples’ minds lately, and our current President has taken a lot of heat from his opponents on just about every policy. This includes the bailout of American automakers General Motors and Chrysler. Ford didn’t technically take any money from the auto bailout, but the Blue Oval has been a major part of the American economic recovery.

As part of his re-election bid, President Obama toured the Washington D.C. Auto Show, taking time to check out two vanguards of American cars, the Shelby GT500 and the “American Pride” custom Camaro. Obama had kind words for both cars, but seemed especially taken with the GT500, which he reportedly called “sick.”

Raw video from the event does not catch this presidential quip, though the story swept through many automotive blogs quick enough. Some members of the automotive media have suggested the President merely said “It’s a stick” though that makes for a much less interesting story. Then again, Obama definitely said “This is what I needed in high school,” and he seemed quite impressed with the Shelby.

And who wouldn’t be? With a 650 horsepower 5.8 liter supercharged V8, a top speed around 200 mph, and a world class suspension system, the 2013 Shelby GT500 promotes the Presidential theme that America is coming back in more ways than one. Whether or not that translates into votes come November remains to be seen. However, with his opponents constantly slamming the bailouts of GM and Chrysler, it isn’t likely we’ll see Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich at a car show any time soon.
