Video: Choosing A Serpentine Pulley Kit With Eddie Motorsports

em03When it comes to dressing up an engine, one area that is often overlooked – for understandable reasons – is the front drive system. Often times, a fresh coat of paint is simpler a task than finding a new set of pulleys and drive belts. There are often so many variations that it’s almost best to stick with what you have and move forward.

But a nice alternative that beats a fresh coat of paint is a complete billet serpentine-belt drive system. As explained by Eddie Motorsports in the video above, there are advantages to a single, serpentine belt system, one of which is that there are no adjustments needed to a serpentine belt.

Serpentine belt systems use a tensioner to apply the proper tension to the belt around all pulleys – both drive and idler. The belt also lasts longer than a standard V-belt; and unlike the V-belt, if the serpentine belt stretches a little, the tensioner takes up that slack. When a V-belt gets loose, an adjustment needs to be made to keep that belt snug on the pulley.

Eddie Motorsports has kits available for small-block and big-block Chevrolet, LS Chevrolet, small-block and Cleveland Ford, and big-block Mopar.

Serpentine belts also have a much larger contact patch with the pulleys than a standard V-belt, meaning less slippage and a better drive system. They also provide less space needed in front of the engine because the compact system drives all components on the same plane.

For those who don’t want a pump mounted reservoir for power steering, a remote reservoirs are also available

Each pulley drive system includes all of the brackets and components necessary for your particular engine, meaning there is no need to worry about what cylinder heads are used, because they are manufactured to mount to the block. Current kits include SBC, BBC, SBF, LS Chevy, Cleveland Ford, and their new BB Chrysler, and are available in several finishes.

LS kits include an ATI balancer to make installation easier no matter what LS engine you have, and Powermaster alternators. Other name brand components that they have partnered with are Edelbrock and Tough Stuff, allowing them to include some high quality components with their kits.

Eddie Motorsports also includes, at no extra charge, the proper pressure power steering pump for your system, whether it’s high or low pressure.
