Slot car racing has been around for decades, giving young boys and girls their first taste of going fast. While not nearly as popular as it used to be, slot car racing still have fans all over the world, and Ford knows a lot of kids grew up with fond memories of sliding across electrified tracks in models of their favorite cars.
We’re guessing that’s why Ford commissioned this awesome recreation of the Mazda Speedway at Laguna Seca, complete with Mustang race cars. Mustangs Daily took this video of the slot car track in action at the recent Chicago Auto Show.
The track isn’t exactly an accurate replica of Laguna Seca, but is rather “inspired” by the famous California raceway. Built by David Beattie of Slot Mods, who also built a slot car track built on a Chevy Camaro, this custom track includes the famous “corkscrew” turn, landscaping and buildings. It looks a lot like the real deal, and it had better for the $90,000 it cost to build.
Beattie went with a Ford theme, placing replica Mustangs on the track and changing all the signage to represent America’s favorite muscle car. The track took several months to build, which is apparent from the level of detail that went into this slot car track. If we ever win the lottery, Beattie is the first guy we’d call in regards to making a Man Cave centerpiece. What famous track would you want to shrink down to slot car size?
