The car gets its name from Ward’s grandpa, who served in the USAF, and recently passed away.

No-Prep races have taken over tracks across the south, and it seems Shayne Ward has taken over No-Prep racing. He recently won three races in a row with Air Force Won, his ’88 Mustang coupe going unbeaten, untied, and unscored upon.

The coupe was completed earlier this year by Northside Chassis in Houston, TX, and built specifically for No-Prep races. Ward purchased the car as a stock-suspension roller after Northside added the 25.3 chromoly cage and full Racecraft front and rear suspension systems. Aside from the Racecraft components, the car has Strange Engineering double-adjustable shocks out back and Santuff struts up front. Josh Lindsey set up the rear suspension on the car after Ward braced the cars’ 8.8 rear at his shop Ward’s Custom Fabrication.

Nothing to see here, move along. Just a simple 388-inch Windsor with a Precision single 88mm turbo.

Lindsey must know what he’s doing to plant the power on a No-Prep surface, but Ward also relies on Andre Davis from Tuned by Dre to tune the car’s FAST 2.0 engine management system and AMS1000 boost controller to get down the track. Ward’s crew consists of Rob Sitton and Sammy Dehoyos.

“I hope those guys know how much I appreciate them. We all work very hard together. I wouldn’t be anywhere without them. I’m very lucky to have those guys on my team, for sure,” Ward says.

Ward says when they get to a track, he looks over the track surface and confers with Davis on the tune-up. Ward trusts Davis, so after Davis’ recommendations, Ward, Sitton, and Dehoyos set about implementing those changes before making a pass.

Evidently, it’s working. Ward has won three No-Prep races in a row, starting at the Doomsday No-Prep at North Star Dragway in Denton, TX. The next event he won was a no-prep event at the Kansas International Dragway in Wichita, KS. The KID race was where Ward matched-up with, and beat, Chuck’s Death Trap Mustang from Street Outlaws. To reach the trifecta, Ward then won Redemption 3.0 at the Texas Raceway.

For Ward, to win these races, it’s a method of not overpowering the track. The combination in the car is not made up of exotic, one-off parts. It’s a Morgan and Son Racing 388-inch Windsor with a Ford Racing R-block, an Eagle crank and rods, JE pistons, a Bullet Racing solid roller cam, Trick Flow Track Heat heads, an Edelbrock Victor intake with a Wilson elbow and throttle body, Ford Racing 160 lb/hr injectors, and a Precision 88mm single turbo. Ward fabricated the cold side tubing of the turbo system, and the headers are, “some cheap kit,” he says.

What isn’t a cheap kit is the car’s transmission — it’s a Nate the Tranny Man Powerglide with a PTC converter and Precision shifter.

The combination runs on E85 and is “totally streetable. It’s actually tagged and inspected,” he says. “This car has all the right parts — a well-built drag car. I beat cars that are faster than mine,” Ward says. He is simply able to use the power he has when others are spinning.

Ward will be looking for win number four this weekend at No-Prep Chaos at Evadale Raceway in Evadale, TX. Can he win four races in a row?
